How a Short Squeeze Works

A short squeeze is when forced short-covering triggers a chain-reaction surge. We explain how to spot a potential short-squeeze candidate ahead of time using short interest ratio, Days-to-Cover, and short-vs-Float ratio.
The Short-Squeeze Mechanism
Short selling is a strategy that bets on a price decline. An investor who borrows and sells a stock short takes a loss if the price rises, and a large enough loss triggers a margin call (forced liquidation) from the broker. A forced liquidation means buying that stock back on the market, which pushes the price up further, which in turn triggers more forced liquidation from other short sellers — a chain reaction.
Short Interest
Short interest is the ratio of shares sold short to total shares outstanding. The convention is to treat 10–15% or higher as a high level. That said, a high short interest doesn't necessarily lead to a short squeeze. If the bearish catalyst is strong, it can actually work as downward pressure instead.
Days-to-Cover (Short Ratio)
Days-to-Cover = short interest shares ÷ average daily volume, which is the number of trading days short sellers would need to fully cover their position. The higher this value (typically 5 days or more), the stronger the upward price pressure during a covering process. A low Days-to-Cover means covering can happen quickly, so the short-squeeze intensity is weak.
Short-vs-Float Ratio
When short interest is high in a stock with a small float, even the same percentage means fewer absolute shares are needed to cover, producing a more explosive move. A stock with a Short Float % of 20% or higher against its float is classified as a strong short-squeeze candidate.
Lessons From GameStop
In 2021, GameStop (GME) had a short-vs-float ratio above 100% and a Days-to-Cover in the tens of days when organized buying from retail investors triggered a short squeeze, sending the price up 20x in just a few days. After the short squeeze ran its course, the price crashed. It's a case study in how important entry and exit timing are.
