What Is Volume Ratio (Relative Volume)?

Volume ratio (relative volume) is the multiple of today's volume compared to that stock's recent average volume. Absolute volume is hard to compare since scale varies stock to stock, but looking at "how many times normal" tells you at a glance which stock is unusually attracting capital today.

How It's Calculated

Volume ratio = today's volume ÷ average volume over the last N days (20 days at DawnScan)

For a stock that averages 100-man shares (1M), if 300-man shares (3M) trade today, the volume ratio = 3.0. That means "3x normal volume traded," a signal of that much of a shift in interest and supply/demand.

Precursor to a Rally, or a Trap?

A volume surge by itself is neutral. Direction and location determine what it means.

  • Precursor signal — volume rising with a strong close near the bottom or in a sideways range suggests possible accumulation
  • Trap signal — a volume explosion at a high that's already run up a lot can be distribution (unloading supply)
