Higher Volatility Means Higher Premium — and Higher Risk
An option premium is theoretically higher the more volatile the underlying asset is. A stock with a large daily trading range, like MSTR or TSLA, also carries a larger call premium, so the headline distribution rate looks high. Capped Upside, and the Downside Isn't Fully Protected Either
The essence of a covered-call structure is "receiving a premium in exchange for selling a call option." When the underlying asset rallies hard, you have to hand over a large share of that gain to the option buyer, so your upside participation is capped. Conversely, when the underlying asset falls hard, the premium you received only offsets the loss by that much — it does not stop the decline. The perception that "selling options gets you a safe dividend" doesn't match the actual profit-and-loss structure.
How to Think About Concentration Risk
Single-company risk means you're fully exposed to that company's earnings, regulation, and industry outlook. When the underlying asset already carries high volatility on its own — like MicroStrategy's heavy exposure to Bitcoin-related assets, or Nvidia's sensitivity to the AI-chip cycle — the options strategy doesn't so much offset that volatility as it does convert volatility into cash flow.
